I think of affiliate marketing and network marketing as being like
a multi-storey building and a single-storey house. To put up a
multi-storey building, you dig an enormous hole in the ground,
and pour money into it. After a long time, if you had enough money
to keep working, you get back up to ground level.
Meanwhile the ordinary house has been
completed, and the owners
are enjoying living there.
Isn't the ordinary house better then? Why do you think there are so
many multi-storey buildings? If you keep watching, the multi-storey
building suddenly seems to get bigger each
day. The long wait for it to get up to ground level is
over, and it keeps growing bigger, and bigger,
and bigger....
Meanwhile the people living in the ordinary house are satisfied with it,
and don't want anything bigger.
Affiliate marketing is ideal if you
want money quickly without spending much. You don't spend anything to
represent a company (don't join a company that tries to charge you to
represent it).
Depending on how good your site is at directing traffic to the affiliate
company, you can make ten or twenty dollars every few weeks, or thousands
of dollars a month. What limits you? It all depends
on your own efforts.
Some affiliate companies offer 2-tier commissions, but don't hold your
breath waiting for second-tier income. You will be amazed at how few
people are prepared to make any effort to make money.
MLM (or "network marketing" or"referral marketing") is often free to start, but you have to buy product from the company each month to qualify for your commissions.
The experienced people don't understand why you are complaining. After all, the amount they spend on the product is just a tiny fraction of their commissions! But you are getting no commissions, and still paying for your product each month. Remember pouring money into the hole in the ground when the multi-storey building was going up?
Network marketing is a numbers game. You have to go through a hundred
prospects to sign up five people under you. But only 5% of these will be
good workers, so you need to sign up another 95 people to be reasonably sure
of getting really good workers to help you to grow your business. Um... that
means approaching another 19000 prospects before you succeed.

This idea is almost affiliate marketing, but if you have a high traffic
site it is very, very, very easy to make money this way. And it costs you nothing.

Most people fail in MLM because they run out of money before they break even (reach ground level). But if you have the money and determination and the ideas, and keep going long enough, you can produce an income that makes an affiliate income look tiny.

MLM marketing has been going for a long time. There are many successful MLM companies, and many that close after a year or two. Amway is the best known MLM company.
Older companies expect you to stock their products, and sell them to get commissions.
Modern ones only expect you to refer people to them - hence
"referral" marketing. You get commissions on all purchases
made by people you referred to a company, just as with affiliate marketing
companies.
Where MLM companies differ from affiliate companies is that MLM companies also give you commissions on purchases made by people referred by the ones you referred, and the people they refer, and the people they refer, and the people they refer.....
Your company can keep growing while you are on holiday, and your income can obviously get much bigger with thousands of people working for you. MLM is not limited by your own time available, once you succeed.
Successful MLM people say that if you are earning ten thousand dollars a month, it is just an added bonus if you actually like the product.
However beginners will do best to interest their friends in the product, not the business opportunity. Why? Because someone who likes the product will keep buying it, but someone who fails to make vast sums of money from the opportunity will blame you for introducing them to a scam! You only get commissions when product is purchased, so these disgruntled entrepreneurs who buy nothing give you no profit.

The idea of affiliate marketing only started a few years ago. One of the best known companies is Amazon.com. The best way to increase the income of the company was to get lots of web sites to place links to Amazon. But it cost a lot of money to buy links to themselves, and it was often ineffective.
So a method was designed, where you can earn commissions by sending people to the company. Each time they buy something you get a commission.
This is a big benefit to the companies, because they pay nothing at all for all the visitors who don't buy anything. At last they can make sure that all the money they are spending on "advertising" results in sales. This is unheard of in advertising - advertising is mostly wasted. Think of how many adverts you don't read in your newspaper.
Be sure that the affiliate marketing company is good before you join one.
Some affiliate companies offer you only two percent commissions.
That is fine for them, but not for you.
Read the contract carefully. Some company contracts say that the
affiliate marketing contract can be ended by the company without reasons being given. A company is not necessarily bad when this is in the contract, the clause may be only inserted by the lawyers, but you don't owe them any loyalty.

There is only one drawback - they will limit the number of affiliates to keep the income high for each affiliate. That's great if you are already an affiliate, but not so good if you apply too late to get in.

In the unlikely event that your beginners website wont't fit on an SBI package
you can choose a host that will give you what you need. For instance if you
are selling 1000 different things that you want to show on your website, and
make it easy for your staff to change the prices and special offers every day
then you need an SQL database, not SBI (you also need someone who understands
SQL to set it up).
You may want to run PERL scripts, or other CGI programs, or SSI or... Well,
if you don't know what these are, you don't want to use them, do you? If
you do know, then try the sites below to see if they offer what you want.

If you want some money now without
spending much money, and already have an active
web site, then choose an affiliate marketing program. There
is nothing to prevent you using affiliate marketing programs to bring
in enough money to start on your way to succeed in a MLM program.
